New game clock system to be tested
2010-08-16
Monday night's game between the Giants and Jets not only features the debut of the New Meadowlands Stadium, but also marks the test of a new game clock system controlled by the on-field officials, USA Today reports.
Brady: ‘I don’t care who makes more’
2010-08-16
Momentum continues to build for a new contract between the Patriots and Tom Brady, who finds a way to say all the right things (and not be a distraction by showing up to play) while the sides presumably work toward a deal.
Brady made his weekly appearance on WEEI on Monday, and reiterated he would like to finish his career with the Patriots, while also acknowledging those types of plans don’t always work out in the end.
“I would love to be here my whole career,” Brady told The Dennis and Callahan Show. “I have goals, and the team has goals, and hopefully they’re down the same line. But, you never know. I mean, Joe Montana got traded. AndJerry Rice did. Really, the best players that ever played their positions. It’s hard to think that if those guys aren’t playing for a team, why would I be excluded from that?”
Cowboys OL Colombo hurts knee in practice
2010-08-16
Unhappy with how the Dallas Cowboys offense played during an afternoon practice, coordinator Jason Garrett kept his unit on the field for a little more work Sunday.
"We have high expectations for ourselves," wide receiver Roy Williams said. "Today wasn't very good for us, but we have another chance tomorrow. ... Look for big things."
Another problem from Sunday's workout was that right tackle Marc Colombo hurt his right knee. He left the field on a cart and was taken for an MRI exam. Colombo missed the last seven games of last regular season with injuries to his left leg, then returned for the playoffs.
The team's official Web site reported that rookie Sam Young replaced Colombo at right tackle, with Robert Brewstermoving to the left side while swing tackle Alex Barron recovers from a sprained ankle. Barron is rehabbing, but his status is uncertain for the Aug. 21 game at San Diego.
Errant throws, dropped passes and other sloppiness were evident throughout team drills against the defense. So after the horn sounded and players stretched, Garrett sent everyone to another field for about 10 more minutes of slow-paced action.
"We just ran through plays so everyone knew what we were doing," said tight end Martellus Bennett, who returned from an ankle injury that's kept him out of the first two preseason games.
Pressure all on Andy Reid now
2010-07-28
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- In the NFL’s often unforgiving circle of life, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid has been handed a rare second opportunity -- a chance to hit the refresh button on his team and his career.
And there he was on the first day of training camp at Lehigh University, in his usual command position on the practice field, about 50 yards behind the middle linebacker, all alone, looking at his own reincarnation.
Gone was Donovan McNabb -- Reid’s first training camp in his 12-year head coaching career without the quarterback he drafted in the first round in 1999.
Gone was Brian Westbrook -- the veteran running back who provided much of the late-game heroics and pyrotechnics that often bailed out the Eagles and their head coach.
And there were all the new faces, including Kevin Kolb, who will have the fewest career starts -- just two -- of any prospective starting quarterback in the NFC this year. In all, the Eagles jettisoned 14 players from their 2009 roster -- more than any team in the league.
NFC North pass-rushers
2010-07-28
As it so often does, Tuesday's SportsNation chat produced a debate topic that merits further discussion. It has been a while, but finally it's time to get back to having at it.
Kirmie of Toledo asked what NFC North team will get the most sacks out of its defensive linemen/linebackers this season. I thought it was an especially pertinent question considering the central theme we've established for the 2010 season: The effectiveness of each NFC North team's counterpunch to the suddenly pass-happy ways of the Air and Space division.
The Minnesota Vikings led the division, and the NFL for that matter, with 48 sacks last season. They'll return their top three pass-rushers, but the competition has closed the gap considerably. For reference, I've given you a snapshot of arguably the top three pass-rushers on each team -- 11 defensive linemen and one linebacker -- in the chart accompanying this post.
Will the Vikings maintain supremacy in this regard? Will Julius Peppers make the Bears' line more feared? And are we overstating the improvement of the Detroit Lions' newly configured group, or will Kyle Vanden Bosch combine with rookie Ndamukong Suh and nose tackle Corey Williams to make a substantive impact on opposing offenses?
As always, let me know what you think in the comments section below. I'll republish a representative sample of your answers, along with my own thoughts, by the end of the week. Have at It.
Terrell Owens Signs with Cincinnati
2010-07-28
The inevitable has happened. Terrell Owens has joined the Bengals on a one-year deal with some major incentives.
It's truly mind boggling how Marvin Lewis is continuously asked to take on the most dynamic and cancerous locker room personalities in all of the NFL. Owens will join Ochocinco to form a dynamic wide receiving duo. They could possibly spend more time choreographing their end zone celebrations than actually practicing.
2010 NFL Preseason Schedule
2010-07-28
The 2010 NFL preseason schedule was released in full on Wednesday afternoon. As always, each team will participate in four exhibition contests prior to the start of the regular season.
The lone exceptions are the participants in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio -- this year, that contest will pit Cincinnati and Dallas on Sunday, Aug. 8. Those two teams will play five preseason games. Carolina and Baltimore will kickoff the first full week of preseason games, Aug. 12 in Baltimore.
Spain wins World Cup
2010-07-28
Spain rules the soccer world, winning the FIFA World Cup at long, long last.
The triumph came after an exhausting 1-0 victory in extra time over the Netherlands on Sunday. Two years after winning the European title, the stylish Spaniards did even better.
This was a physical test of attrition that sometimes turned dirty — a finals-record 13 yellow cards were handed out and the Dutch finished with 10 men. In the end, it was Andrés Iniesta breaking free in the penalty area, taking a pass from Cesc Fàbregas and putting a right-footed shot from eight yards just past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
Uruguay's cheating talk 'shameful,' says coach
2010-07-05
CAPE TOWN — Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez is tiring of the cheat bleats.
During his soccer team's pre-match 2010 FIFA World Cup semifinal media conference at Green Point Stadium, an hour before the Netherlands' scheduled appearance, the hot-button subject of striker Luis Suarez's blatant handball off the goal-line to deny Ghana a place in the semifinals was raised yet again.

2010-07-05
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- One of Diego Maradona's assistant coaches with Argentina wants him to stay with the team in the wake of its devastating 4-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup quarterfinals.
Assistant coach Alejandro Mancuso offered his support to Maradona in a radio interview on Monday, saying the national team's staff wanted him to return.
"Knowing Diego, it is difficult for me to think he wants to step down after failing in his objective to win the cup," Mancuso said. "We can't throw away all the good work we've done."

Wade’s priority this summer isn’t free agency
2010-06-21
MIAMI (AP)—Dwyane Wade has had June 20 circled for a long time.
Not because Sunday will be exactly four years since the Miami Heat beat the Dallas Mavericks for the 2006 NBA title, the series where Wade’s spectacular play earned him the finals MVP trophy. In fact, Wade insists that until he was reminded of it a few days ago, he didn’t even make the connection between that date and the championship anniversary.
For Wade, June 20 is significant for two other reasons—his young sons, Zaire and Zion. He’ll spend Father’s Day with them, something that hasn’t always been possible during a nasty divorce and custody fight that has waged since 2007 between the Heat star and his estranged wife.
Year of the Pitcher, especially in NL West
2010-06-21
Some have dubbed the 2010 season the Year of the Pitcher. For good reason.
Entering Monday, Major League Baseball's overall ERA of 4.17 is the lowest it's been since 1992. Twenty-two starting pitchers currently have ERAs below 3.00.
Pitching dominance has also been evident in the number of shutouts thrown this season, as teams have combined for 127 shutouts, a number that is ahead of last year's pace by a sizeable margin.
But those shutouts have also been coming at especially impressive rate from four teams in the NL West, with the Padres and Rockies tied for the MLB lead, along with the Mets, with nine shutouts, while the Dodgers and Giants are tied for fifth with six each.
Chile 1-0 Switzerland: Gonzalez Strike Downs
2010-06-21
Chile took a step towards winning group H with a 1-0 victory over Switzerland, who had winger Valon Behrami sent off in the first half.
Just as they did in their win over Honduras, Chile lined up in an aggressive 3-3-1-3 formation as they looked to qualify for the knockout rounds ahead of the final group stage showdown with Spain. Humberto Suazo earned his first start of the tournament in attack, and Gonzalo Jara slotted in on the left.

C's chance to sweep brushed aside, lose Game 4 to Magic
2010-05-25
BOSTON — Kendrick Perkins words seem almost prophetic in hindsight.
"This is going to be their best game," Perkins told CSNNE.com prior to tip-off. "If you think teams are going to come and lay down, they're not."
After having their way with the Magic in Games 1-3, Orlando finally made some adjustments that for the most part, worked.

Penguins have some decisions to make
2010-05-16
It's a difficult evaluation: a team that fails to repeat as champion. Ken Hitchcock once said defending your crown "is the toughest thing in sports," and I'm sure Dan Bylsma would agree.
Sometimes, people lose perspective of that. Just because the Penguins went one year without winning doesn't mean they need to trade Evgeni Malkin, even though the greatest challenge going forward will be managing the salary cap. It says something (negative) when a team hits a Grand Slam with all four of its high draft picks, signs them to reasonable long-term contracts, and still can't manage the system.
South Africa, SADC in last push for 2010 World Cup
2010-05-16
“South Africa is ready, except Bafana Bafana’, this is a South African newspaper headline that sums up the readiness of Botswana’s neighbour to host the first FIFA World Cup on the African soil.
The other part of the headline does not matter much as FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke points out that the winner will be football when the last whistle is blown in July.

The evolution of the green has the rest of the NBA taking notice, after all they were all but written off by the supposed expert NBA analysts. Backchecking: Ranford caps off a dynasty
2010-05-11
The dynasty was supposed to be over.
With ‘The Great One’ in Los Angeles and Grant Fuhr sidelined, the Edmonton Oilers’ glory years appeared to be behind them heading into the 1990 playoffs.
But, as opponents would soon learn, Bill Ranford, a determined 23-year-old netminder who had toiled in the shadow of Fuhr for the past two seasons, had something to say about that.

Baseball Season Underway With Familiar Faces
2010-05-11
The major league baseball season is now one week old, and in the National League at least traditionally powerful teams have already started to set a brisk pace at the top of the standings. Obviously, with just six or seven games in the books it’s premature to draw any conclusions about who’ll be left standing at the end of the summer. At the very least, however, several teams that were expected to contend have dispelled any notion of a 'slow start'.
